Lyman Heung is a New York based professional performer and ballroom dance instructor. Born in Honolulu, Oahu, and raised in Hong Kong, Lyman discovered his passion for the performing arts from the age of 9 when his primary school music teacher asked him to take part in the school's production of 'The Pirates of Penzance.' Heedless to take on the role of the Major General, he felt at-ease on stage whilst pattering the lyrics of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “I am the very model of a modern Major-General”.
From that moment on Lyman began training in his first style of dance, Ballroom. During this time, Lyman received musical theatre experience from youth theatre productions, before taking the step to begin his formal training at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. At only 15 years old, Lyman won his first National Ballroom Dance Championship in Hong Kong. He also represented the country at various World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) competitions around the world including the UK, Singapore and China.
Lyman received his BA in Drama and Theatre Studies from University of Kent in the UK, where he focused predominantly on Physical Theatre. Influenced by his fascination with the works of Pina Bausch, Jiri Kylian and Merce Cunningham , Lyman further broadened his dance repertoire to include contemporary, ballet, and hip hop. During his time at Kent he engaged himself in the University’s ballroom dance club where he served as choreographer, instructor, and club president. His involvement in the club is what later led him to a career as a professional ballroom dance instructor here in New York City.
From 2016-2020, Lyman worked under Dancing With The Stars professionals Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Valentin Chmerkovskiy in Dance With Me Studios. In recognition of his work, Lyman received the Top Teacher Award for three consecutive years before his departure.
In 2020, Lyman toured North America with the National Tour of ‘Chicago’ The Musical as an ensemble member, before returning to New York in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Later that year, Lyman was featured in NBC’s One Night Only: The Best of Broadway, performing alongside the Broadway company of Chicago. His additional theatre credits include Ren in Footloose (Hong Kong), Wild Swans (UK), Disco Inferno (Hong Kong), A Chorus Line (Hong Kong), and The Wiz (Hong Kong).
Currently, Lyman serves as Choreographer and Performer for the Off-Broadway production of 'The Importance of Being Earnest(ly) LGBTQ+,' a reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s classic tale 'The Importance of Being Earnest.'
When Lyman is not currently volunteering with Heart of Dinner (a non-profit organization that works to fight food insecurity and isolation experienced by Asian-American seniors), you might be able to see and hear him unabashedly singing and dancing outdoors whilst on his scooter, hiking, rock-climbing, or kayaking.
